About this place
Firing up its charcoal grill right at noon, Kushi Seven brings proper daytime yakitori to Kyoto's Sanjo Omiya neighbourhood. Leading the menu is the house signature, a generously proportioned skewer of thick seseri (chicken neck) threaded directly onto the bamboo. Its deep, savoury juices paired with a rich tare glaze make for a thoroughly satisfying bite. Other robust offerings immediately catch the eye, from a hefty minced chicken tsukune playfully tagged as an oversized meat bat to the distinctively firm, chewy bite of the "Jk" texture skewer, ensuring each of the 1 skewer selections commands attention.
Standard cuts benefit from attentive heat management over the coals. The skin is grilled crisp and fragrant on the surface, liver is kept tender, and prized rarities like kokoronokori (a delicate cut connecting heart and liver) round out the variety. Alternating these richer bites with refreshing shiso rolls or momo wasabi, alongside cold plates such as smacked cucumber or ponzu-dressed chicken skin, gives the meal a pleasing ebb and flow.
The beverage programme is tailored to suit charcoal smoke, starting with Kinmiya shochu and soda where guests can specify either a lighter or regular pour. More playful concoctions include the Emo T, an aromatic Earl Grey tea highball, and Cardamon Take Seven, an aromatic spiced shochu. Built mainly around a casual standing counter with additional tables and terrace seating, the shop accepts cash payments only. With each of the 1 hearty skewers holding its own, it is an inviting corner to drop in and graze at an easy pace, drink in hand.
